SCHOOL YEAR 2023-24

ICE CREAM SOCIAL

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2023

Thank you, everyone, for showing up for our FIRST after-school family social event on Friday, September 15. It was nice to reconnect with old friends and to meet so many new IS families. We hope everyone had a great time. We cannot do things like this without the help of many volunteers and our PTSA. Thank you! Questions? Contact Co-VPs of Community, Maggie Lo and Anjum Anwar.

HIGH SCHOOL & MIDDLE SCHOOL TAILGATES

SEPTEMBER 7 & 14, 2023

We are off to a terrific year at International School! The ISPTSA welcomed our parents and guardians to the nearby Kelsey Creek Park parking lot right after drop-off to enjoy coffee and treats. Many of us took this great opportunity to meet up with our fellow International Families. The High School Tailgate was on Thursday, September 14.

The Middle School Tailgate took place on Thursday, September 7. A great group of folks showed up to meet and talk. It was a lot of fun to get to know new Middle School parents and touch base with returning ones.

For questions, email Co-VPs of Community, Maggie Lo and Anjum Anwar.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENT NIGHT AND SOCIAL

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2023

Dear Middle School Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for coming to the MS Parent Social and Parent Night this past Tuesday. We had a good turnout: ~50+ people; almost filled up the library.

First, we want to thank Arty (our MS counselor) for her wonderful talk on character, emotional, and social education. It is a super important subject that many of us might not be aware of until now. Her talk really resonates with us:

  1. Respect and trust is the key to a deep and long-lasting parent-kid relationship - just like any relationship.
  2. One of the best ways to help our kids to grow is to grow ourselves - becoming more effective people ourselves.
  3. Being aware of our bad habits and taking tiny steps to build good habits every day pays a huge dividend that compounds over time - the foundations of an effective (or transformative) life.
  4. Ultimately, what we want our students to achieve is long and lasting happiness - ‘The Science of Well Being’: Yale’s most popular class available via Coursera | YaleNews

We are also grateful that Arty is taking initiative on incorporating character/emotional/social learning into our student's curriculum, collaborating with her colleagues at IS.

Second, a big thank you for coming to the Parent Social & Parent Night and bringing in the tasty dishes! By showing up, you have made contributions to our school community:

  1. Your presence and participation have elevated Arty's talk!
  2. Socializing with fellow parents and sharing our experiences on raising middle school students in this increasingly sophisticated and fast-changing world both elevated our mood and bonded us together.
  3. Talking frankly to IS staff about our concerns over our students, school, and BSD; and hearing their thoughts on what has been done, what can be done, and hard to do due to various constraints will help us collaborate with the school better. The success of Last Saturday's Auction has fully demonstrated how committed, creative, and resourceful we parents are. By working with the IS staff, no obstacles that stand in the way of our students' education are too hard to tackle!

Finally, for the parents who were not able to make it to the Parent Night, there will be more opportunities in the future. We will announce the event earlier so that people have more time to plan.

Sincerely,

Your 6, 7, and 8th grade Parent Rep.
